re: USA Embassy
The long-held vision of an Indigenous Cultural Centre on the Akikodjiwan Islands was recently undermined, yet again, by the Canadian government offering the old USA embassy to house an Indigenous Centre instead. The open letter, co-authored by Senator Joyal and architect and elder Douglas Cardinal explains the inappropriateness of this proposal.
For the 13 Traditional Grandmothers of Pikwakanagan

Akikodjiwan is the Algonquin name for the Chaudiere falls and surrounding islands on the Ottawa River. Today, this river travels right through the centre of the Capital of Canada. Since time immemorial, the Kichi Zibi (Great River) was revered for its life and beauty, in particular the sacred Akikpautic Falls (Chaudiere Falls). Adjacent to the falls, are a cluster of islands; sacred land for tribes across the territories.
There is an indigenous vision and plan for this site, that would heal the land, while letting the land heal the people. There is also the threat of a condo development of the islands which would privitize the land, and would continue the desecration of the area to permanently destroy the sacredness of the place.
For years, local people—First Nations, architects, professors, community members and conservationists—have fought the proposed large-scale condominium and commercial development on Chaudiere Island, as well as the dam on the Chaudiere Falls. The traditional Algonquin people assert that the area is of significant spiritual and ecological importance and calls for its permanent protection.
The symbolic significance of this site from Nation to Nation is rare to come by. An opportunity for truth and reconcilliation is here, and it is our duty to make sure that Akikodjiwan be protected now and long into the future.
BRING ALGONQUIN ELDERS' VISION TO LIFE!
Your passion to empower the First Nations of Canada through truth and reconcilliation for future generations is the driving force behind this campaign.
Together, we've protected the islands from Windmill's 'Zibi' condo development thus far, and begun a truly indigenous design. Help us bring the indigenous vision to life! Help us to stop the Zibi development once and for all.
